The Hague, January 21st 2011
Foreign companies bring new jobs to the West Holland region in 2010.
During 2010, the WestHolland Foreign Investment Agency (WFIA) successfully completed 32 projects with foreign companies. These companies have expressed their plans to grow and, combined, will eventually create 766 new jobs. Six projects in 2010 were specifically related to the retention of existing companies, preserving a total of 400 jobs in the region.
Almost half of the projects originated in China or North America, which are priority areas of acquisition by the WFIA. The United Kingdom and South Korea also contributed significantly to the 2010 results. International Baccalaureate (IB) was the most prominent project of 2010. Coming from Wales, IB will open a new Global Center in The Hague and expects to eventually employ 244 people.
“I consider 2010 results as a wonderful birthday gift. Since its founding ten years ago, the WFIA has reported very good results. Many of the new established foreign companies in WestHolland region have created numerous jobs. This is very beneficial for The Hague and its surroundings. I am proud of the WFIA results”, says Henk Kool, alderman for Economic Affairs of the City of The Hague and chairman of the board of participants of the WFIA.
Most of the acquired companies in 2010 operate in the traditionally strong sectors in West Holland: Oil & Gas, IT & Telecom and Life Sciences. Since its founding in 2000, the WFIA has been heavily investing in the networks of these sectors. The establishment and growth of these networks contributes substantially to WFIA’s annual results. In addition, the WFIA was successful in the acquisition of emerging-sector companies operating in Agribusiness, Safety & Security and Gaming. The innovative developments in Biotechnology offer great opportunities for acquisition in the coming years.
The WFIA assists international companies in establishing, expanding or relocating their operations in the WestHolland region. Recently celebrating its 10th anniversary, the WFIA was founded in 2000 by the municipalities of The Hague, Delft, Leiden, and Zoetermeer along with The Hague Chamber of Commerce and The Hague Region. Since December 2008 the municipality of Lansingerland has been a member of the WFIA. The province of South Holland also supports the WFIA.
