Rijswijk’s mayor Mrs. Van der Wel-Markerink hosts THIN

Yesterday evening I visited the THIN meeting, together with my colleague Niels Krol.

THIN, which stands for The Hague International Network, was founded by the City of The Hague and The Chamber of Commerce of The Hague with the objective of regularly bringing together people from international business, the diplomatic corps, civil service, as well as local professionals in the international community and governments.
Since the municipality of Rijswijk is home to a considerable amount of large international organizations such as the European Patent Office, Shell’s Laboratories and, host to many expats living in Rijswijk and around The Hague, Mrs. Van der Wel- Markering, Rijswijk’s mayor was pleased to host this event.

The theme of this event was: “Rijswijk and its care for expats”.
The mayor told us in her speech, that in recent years the service towards expats has been improved. The website of the municipality has been translated into English, and meetings were organized to support and promote the cooperation between expats and international companies in Rijswijk. Rijswijk has a great number of jobs available in comparison to the number of inhabitants: 48000 inhabitants and 35000 jobs. The mayor also stressed that her municipality is one of the greenest places in the Randstad, and the living standard is high, due to the great variety of available homes. Moreover in Rijswijk there is no need to be bored in your spare time: there are many activities that you may pursue i.e. in sports and culture, or you can stroll in the parks, estates or along the avenues.
Next weekend I am planning to visit the theatre in Rijswijk and before that I think I’ll go for a long walk in the nearby Parc Overvoorde.

If you would like to attend a next meeting, simply inform THIN’s secretariat and contact Marianne van Zon by addressing thin@planet.nl.
